At Broyhill Leadership Conference, delegates participate in a variety of activities centered around being the best leader one can be. Many of the high school students who attend BLC are already leaders, but each person can hone his or her skills to become a better leader in their life today, and in their future.

One of the most important leadership activities delegates participate in is called Mountain Climbing, which is a goal-setting activity created by the founder of BLC, Michael Broome. Delegates are encouraged to set goals through this format so that they can learn how to set goals and stay motivated throughout the process of accomplishing them. When they learn to do this in high school, they will be much more likely to accomplish long-term goals in their adulthood. Students are encouraged to take home their materials from this activity and use them throughout the year to keep track of their progress and stay motivated to accomplish their goal using the Mountain Climbing method.

Delegates who return to BLC multiple times are encouraged to report back on their goal-setting progress -- Did they accomplish their goal during the school year? If they did, what advice do they have for other delegates? If not, what could they have done differently? Self-reflection, evaluation, and progress monitoring are important when it comes to effectively accomplishing goals. Students learn that in order to be effective leaders, they must be able to plan strategically, monitor progress, and adjust when necessary in order to accomplish their goals.

An example of a Broyhill Leadership Conference alumni who has used our Mountain Climbing method is Colette. She is from York, South Carolina and is currently attending Erskine College. She attended BLC her junior and senior year of high school and absolutely loved it. During her two years at BLC, Colette was elected president of her council, created strong friendships that are still thriving, and planned future life goals. One of the goals she set while at BLC during our Mountain Climbing Goal Setting lesson was to earn a scholarship for track in college. A year later, she accomplished her goal and broke school records through hard work and sticking to her plan. Colette says, "I owe a great deal of gratitude to BLC in help equipping, encouraging, and empowering me to be the best version of myself." She is a true leader and is someone that Broyhill Leadership Conference is so proud to have as an alumni.

At Broyhill Leadership Conference this summer, we can't wait to teach more delegates this goal-setting method and celebrate with them when they achieve success. Register your high school student now to be a part of this wonderful experience including lessons and activity on goal-setting, communication, collaboration, active reading and listening, problem solving, and more.
